Norwood, Mass—Signal isolation: for those who know what it is, it is a wide-ranging, often-mandatory problem-solver; for those who don’t, it's a magical function which can hopefully, somehow save their design.
The ADM3054 digital CAN (Controller Area Network) transceiver from Analog Devices, Inc. can be used by either camp, as it provides isolation for digital signals up to 5 kVrms, and is specified for temperatures between -40°C and +125°C. Target applications are automotive and industrial designs where isolation is needed either for signal integrity (ground loops, floating signals) or user safety.

The ADM3054 digital CAN transceiver from Analog Devices
tackles industrial and automotive interface problems.
As a signal-only isolation device, the ADM3054 is used where power is already available via an isolated rail or is easily available via a transformer pick-off winding (ADI also makes isolated signal + power devices in this family). The device’s logic is powered with a single 3.3-V or 5-V supply on VDD1 while the bus side uses a single 5-V supply on VDD2 only.
This physical-layer transceiver fully complies with the ISO 11898 CAN standard, and uses Analog Devices’ iCoupler® digital isolator technology; it can operate at data rates of up to 1 Mbps. The ADM3054 combines a three-channel digital isolator with a CAN transceiver in a 10 mm × 10 mm single-surface-mount, 16-lead, wide-body SOIC (small-outline IC) package, which the vendor claims yields a reduction of up to 70 percent in BOM (bill of materials) component count and 61 percent in PC-board footprint.
The transceiver has integrated ±36V fault protection on the CAN bus pins to guard against shorts to power/ground in 12-V and 24-V systems. The device also has current-limiting and thermal-shutdown features that protect against output short circuits and situations where the bus might be shorted to ground or power terminals.
Pricing and availability: The ADM3054 is in full production and is priced at $2.10 (1000 pieces).
