MANHASSET, NY — The 2009 International Conference on Computer-Aided Design is going out of its familiar territory in presenting a couple of talks on cloud computing and energy conservation.

The ICCAD keynote will be delivered by IBM Fellow Hamid Pirahesh, a senior manager responsible for the exploratory database department at IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, Calif. He will discuss "Impact of Cloud Computing on Extreme Scale Analytics Platforms."

Meanwhile, Byron Washom, Director of Strategic Energy Initiatives at the University of California, San Diego, will give a luncheon presentation titled Smart Grid for the 21st Century.

Washom will offer a look at UC San Diego's pioneering projects to meet 20 percent of its supply from renewable energy, accomplish 20 percent permanent load shifting through energy storage, and reduce its demand through C3 (computer, communications and conrol) technologies.

The IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation and Cadence Design Systems will offer a live webcast of the keynote, "Impact of Cloud Computing on Extreme Scale Analytics Platforms."

The webcast for those who are unable to attend ICCAD is free, but limited to first 600 registrants.

An ICCAD panel will explore the publication process and address such issues as: Are hardcopy, paper publications still relevant? What is the future of electronic publication and archiving?

The conference runs Nov.2 to Nov. 5 in San Jose, Calif.
